0-3 years: This age group may be overwhelmed and scared
by the most lovable character. If a baby or toddler begins to be disturbed,
it is probably best to move away. Otherwise get down on their level,
kneel or squat if the costume allows you to.
3-10 years: This is the most fun and responsive age
group. Characters can be loved to death or even worshipped as heroes
by these kids. A gentle approach is always rewarded.
10 years - teens: Children in this age group are inclined
to treat a character as an object of "fun". Physical assault and teasing
is regrettably all too common with this age group. The important thing
here is never to loose your temper. The teasing will stop when they
realize they will get no reaction and possibly get into trouble if
they persist.
...Always send your
mascot out with a chaperone.... A chaperone needs to act as your mascot's
eyes, ears and voice, as well as a bodyguard. It is not uncommon for
people, not only children, to hit or kick a mascot, or pull
it's tail. There have also been cases of mascots being assaulted and
the crowd thinking it's part of the show. It is very important that
your mascot is never left alone....arrange hand signals with your
chaperone...see more in Performer
